The “literacy” part of religious literacy is not just a metaphor for knowing something about a topic. Literacy is a field of study in its own right. More than just the capacity to read and write, it is a complex meaning-making process. This session will introduce literacy theory and research, including major turning points in theory and useful terminology. We aim to start a conversation about how more attention to the literacy components can bridge and deepen religious literacy.
